Language teaching
in multi-cultural Britain
From 1977 to 1993 Marion headed provision for teaching English to adults in Croydon. From this base she pioneered a range of educational initiatives among minority communities, and helped spread the approaches across the country through published articles, teachers’ guidebooks, and being an invited lecturer on in-service training. She demonstrated the importance of helping children maintain their own community languages, and she encouraged British teachers to draw on the experience of people from minority communities and to explore their cultures. She helped found several organisations to support refugees and asylum seekers, and advocated for better educational provision for them.
