Teaching Britain’s Community Languages
Materials and methods with examples from teaching Urdu
Makes the case for teaching community languages and then surveys the limited range of appropriate materials for teaching Urdu [available at the time of writing, mid 1980s). Includes sections on reading books published in Pakistan and on bi-lingual books for young children published in Britain.
The second half explains the methods used in materials developed by Ralph Russell that have proved highly effective in teaching adults, and suggests how they could be adapted for use in schools.
