Nine case studies from the work of Save the Children describe attempts to improve the quality of primary education in countries where resources are limited and where children face often extreme problems of poverty and social disadvantage. Two studies are set in remote rural areas – one in Africa, one in India – where there was no school and the community was supported to start one. Those from Lebanon, Liberia and Mozambique tell of children’s lives traumatically disrupted by conflict, and the efforts to re-establish schools or help children deal with the psychological effects of war. The studies from Pakistan and Mongolia describe situations where global economic pressures adversely affected children’s chances of education, and how Save the Children responded to this challenge. Those from Ethiopia and Peru describe support to local communities, enabling them to engage with their governments in pressing for more relevant education.
